What to Expect at Your Child’s First Appointment at Conveniently Active Kids

Bringing your child to a new clinic can feel like a big step — especially if they’re neurodivergent, managing a disability, or feeling unsure about new environments. At Conveniently Active Kids, we know that the first session sets the tone. Our goal is to make it calm, predictable, and genuinely positive for both you and your child.

Here’s exactly how an initial consultation works:

1. A gentle, relaxed welcome

When you arrive, you’ll meet your child’s Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) — a friendly, calm and highly trained professional who works with children of all ages, abilities, and neurotypes.

We never rush. We give your child time to settle, look around, and get comfortable in their own way.

2. A parent-led conversation — because you know your child best

We’ll start by talking with you about:

  • Your child’s diagnosis (if they have one)
  • Their strengths, challenges and sensory needs
  • What daily life looks like at home, school or childcare
  • What they love, what they avoid, and what motivates them
  • Any safety, medical or behavioural considerations
  • What you hope they’ll achieve

Your insights shape everything we do.

3. Getting to know your child — through movement, play or quiet observation

Depending on your child’s comfort level, we may:

  • Do a simple movement assessment
  • Explore balance, coordination or strength through play
  • Observe how they move, listen, and interact
  • Introduce small, fun activities to build trust
  • Adjust the session completely if they feel overwhelmed

There is no pressure for them to “perform.” If your child needs more time to warm up, that’s perfectly okay.

4. Supportive goals that make sense for your family

Together, we’ll set achievable goals that match your child’s needs and your family’s routine. These might be:

  • Feeling more confident in movement
  • Improving balance, coordination or strength
  • Supporting motor development
  • Managing sensory needs through movement
  • Improving attention and self-regulation
  • Reducing falls or fatigue
  • Helping your child participate more at school, sport, or play

We always focus on progress, not perfection.

5. A personalised exercise plan — designed with your child in mind

Your AEP will create a gentle, structured plan that may include:

  • Fun movement games
  • Strength or balance activities
  • Gross motor skill development
  • Support strategies for emotional regulation
  • Sensory-friendly movement options
  • Hydrotherapy (if appropriate)
  • A simple home program that fits into your routine

Everything is tailored so your child feels safe, seen and successful.

6. Clear next steps (no guesswork for parents!)

You’ll leave with:

  • A clear understanding of your child’s plan
  • An explanation of why each activity supports their development
  • Information about frequency of sessions
  • Optional at-home strategies
  • Guidance on NDIS reporting, funding, and how we liaise with teachers, OTs, speech therapists and support workers

We partner with you — because you’re the expert on your child.

The heart of it all?

Your child’s first appointment is about building trust, lowering anxiety, and showing them that movement can feel joyful, achievable and empowering.

We meet your child exactly where they are — and grow from there.
