Lymphoedema Therapy

Lymphoedema Therapy at Conveniently Active

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition characterised by the abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid, leading to swelling, often in the arms or legs. While there’s no cure, effective management is possible through specialised therapy.

At Conveniently Active, we offer comprehensive lymphoedema therapy tailored to individual needs, aiming to reduce swelling, alleviate discomfort, and improve quality of life.

What Is Lymphoedema Therapy?

Lymphoedema therapy focuses on reducing swelling and preventing further fluid accumulation in affected areas. The cornerstone of treatment is Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT), a two-phase approach.

Decongestion Phase: Aims to reduce swelling and improve limb shape. This phase typically lasts 2–4 weeks and includes:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to promote fluid drainage.
  • Compression Therapy: Application of multi-layered bandaging or compression garments to maintain limb size reduction.
  • Skin Care: Maintaining skin health to prevent infections.
  • Exercise: Specific movements to enhance lymphatic flow and muscle strength.
The second phase is the maintenance phase, which focuses on sustaining the results achieved during decongestion. Patients are educated on self-management techniques, including:

  • Self-MLD: Techniques for at-home lymphatic drainage.
  • Ongoing Compression: Continued use of compression garments.
  • Daily Exercise: Incorporating movement to support lymphatic health.
  • Regular Monitoring: Keeping track of limb size and symptoms.
These methods are supported by evidence and are considered best practice for managing lymphoedema.

Ideal Candidates for Lymphoedema Therapy

Lymphoedema therapy is beneficial for individuals experiencing swelling in the arms, legs, or other parts of the body, which is often a result of surgery, radiation, or trauma. It is particularly helpful for those who have undergone post-cancer treatment, especially after breast cancer surgeries where lymph nodes may be removed or damaged.

Additionally, individuals with chronic venous insufficiency, which leads to fluid buildup in the extremities, can benefit from this therapy. Primary lymphedema, a rare inherited condition present from birth, is another condition that can be managed effectively through lymphoedema therapy.

Early intervention is crucial. If you notice signs of swelling or heaviness in any part of your body, it’s advisable to consult your GP or specialist promptly.
